Our December Member of the Month, Drew Speakes, is not your typical CPA. For one, he once lived in Bogota, Columbia. For two, he’s binged all of Homeland with his wife over quarantine, but “it’s no Breaking Bad.” Drew works for Embark as a financial consultant and manages their outsourced accounting practice. Embark is a financial advisory firm that’s just as much about people as it is know-how and skill. Embark has locations in Texas, Oklahoma, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Better yet, each one of Embark’s locations is situated in a coworking space. Ready to get the scoop on what makes Drew Drew?

What do you do at Embark and in what circumstance would I come to you for something?
Embark is an accounting consulting firm. I am a consultant but also manage our outsourced accounting practice, focusing primarily on the energy industry. You could come to me for accounting guidance (acquisitions, audit readiness, clean-up, process improvement, back-office efficiencies, staff continuity, etc.) or to explore outsourcing your entire accounting function (day-to-day transactions through monthly/quarterly/annual financial reporting).

What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
Very boring and expected answer, but I’d have to say earning my CPA license. I had just moved to Tulsa and was grinding through public accounting busy-season hours.

What’s a trip that has changed you, and why?
I lived in Bogota, Colombia back in 2009. That experience provided perspective, both professionally and personally, and helped me prioritize my life.

What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
Reading… always.

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important?
My boys are 7 and 4, and I am continuously learning how to be a better parent. The process of selflessness is continuous. It’s important that I do all I can to help them become responsible, successful, well-adjusted adults.

Do you prefer being active or relaxing during your free time?
Both. The key for me is being active before relaxing!

Are you a dog person or a cat person (or neither)?
100% dog. Can’t trust a cat.

What book are you reading now/What show are you bingeing?
During quarantine, my wife and I got through all eight seasons of Homeland. It’s no Breaking Bad, but it’s a really good show.

What is one of your favorite things about being a member of the root coworking?
The welcoming, come-as-you-are environment. It’s a place that people want to be, not have to be.
